As spring arrives and the school year begins to wind down, children and staff at Kosciusko County Head Start are focusing on one important milestone: Getting ready for kindergarten! For many preschoolers, this season marks the beginning of an exciting transition into a new learning environment.
This year, 64 Head Start students will take the next step and start kindergarten in August.
Learning About Growth and Change
Throughout the spring, Head Start teachers intentionally plan activities that help children understand change, growth, and new beginnings. These lessons support children as they prepare emotionally and socially for the move to kindergarten.
Classroom activities often explore how living things grow and change over time. Children may plant seeds and observe flowers growing, or watch caterpillars transform into butterflies as they learn that change is a natural part of life.
Students in Ms. Holly’s Head Start class in Claypool used their new grow tower to plant vegetables, which they then harvested to celebrate the completion of their study of food.
Helping Families Through the Kindergarten Transition
Starting kindergarten is an important milestone not only for children, but also for families. Head Start staff understand that each family experiences this transition differently, and emotions can range from excitement to uncertainty.
To help families feel prepared and supported, teachers and staff provide information about kindergarten expectations, school readiness skills, and local kindergarten registration opportunities. Families are encouraged to ask questions and stay informed throughout the transition process.
Student’s in Ms. Stephanie’s Head Start class at Mentone get ready for Kindergarten Roundup. They are ready to be Mentone Bulldogs in the fall.
At the end of the school year, each Head Start site hosts special celebrations to recognize the children’s accomplishments and celebrate their readiness for kindergarten. These events give children, families, and staff the opportunity to reflect on a successful school year together.
Students moving on to kindergarten also receive special “Congratulations” signs to celebrate this exciting achievement.
