Sabrina came to Cardinal as an eager and ambitious young woman barely out of her teens. She moved into a group home and, unlike most people, was not shy about letting us know she wanted to move into Community Living and have her own home.
Sabrina realized she needed to learn some skills before jumping into more independence. So, she worked with her Cardinal staff and her case manager to develop a plan to make her hope a reality.
Through specific goal setting and behavior management, Sabrina learned that she had to schedule her time wisely, arrange for a way to get to work and learn to cook healthy meals, care for her home, and manage her household budget.
These are all important and sometimes difficult skills to master. It took hard work, constant course correction, and some real grit and determination, but Sabrina succeeded and moved into her own apartment!
Today, she chooses what meals to cook for herself and how to manage her household budget. She is growing increasingly independent, making her own decisions with the guidance of staff who check in with her regularly. In the future, she will do most of it herself.
Since coming to Cardinal, Sabrina has learned new skills, received the keys to her new home, and faces a future filled with dignity and independence.
