Join us in celebrating Public Transit Month and the essential role public transportation plays in strengthening our community, one ride at a time!

Our KABS fleet is visible throughout the community.

Public Transit Month in March is a time to recognize the essential role public transportation plays in building strong, connected communities. Across the country, transit systems help people reach jobs, health care, education, and daily necessities. Right here in Kosciusko County, KABS is proud to fill that role.

Operated by Cardinal Services, KABS (Kosciusko Area Bus Service) provides safe, reliable, and affordable public transportation to residents throughout the county. During Public Transit Month, we celebrate not just buses and routes, but the opportunity, independence, and economic impact public transit creates.

We also celebrate and recognize the people: our drivers, dispatchers, administrative staff, and community partners who make public transportation possible every day. Their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to service keep Kosciusko County moving forward.

Meet KABS Dispatcher Angela Wilson. Her dedication, organization, and heart for serving our riders keep everything running smoothly.

Why Public Transportation Matters

Public transportation is more than a ride. It is a pathway to independence, economic growth, and community connection. It is critical infrastructure that strengthens local economies, supports workforce development, reduces transportation barriers, and increases access for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Through KABS, riders can:

• Travel to and from work consistently
• Access medical and therapy appointments
• Reach grocery stores and essential services
• Attend school or training programs
• Participate in community and recreational activities

For many residents, KABS is not simply convenient, it is essential. Reliable public transit provides stability for families, supports local employers, and ensures that transportation is not a barrier to participation in community life.

KABS by the Numbers

Public Transit Month is also a time to highlight the measurable impact of transit in our county. KABS continues to grow and evolve to meet community needs through:

• On-demand public transportation services
• Deviated fixed route services
• Year-over-year ridership growth
• Expanded technology for dispatching and rider experience
• A commitment to safety, efficiency, and customer service

Each ride represents more than a trip, it represents access to opportunity. Last year, KABS provided 44,086 rides to our community.

Supporting Employment and Community Inclusion

Public transportation plays a vital role in workforce stability. KABS helps residents arrive at work on time and ready to succeed, strengthening relationships between employees and employers across Kosciusko County.

Beyond employment, transit fosters inclusion. Whether attending a local event, volunteering, or simply connecting with friends and family, public transportation ensures that residents remain active, engaged members of the community, regardless of vehicle ownership.

“Having a reliable ride means I don’t have to worry about how I’m getting to work. It helps me feel independent.”
